What Is Back Strain/Sprain?

A back strain involves overstretching or tearing muscles or tendons, while a sprain affects ligaments supporting the spine. These injuries commonly occur from lifting, twisting, overuse, or sudden awkward movement.

When muscles or ligaments are overloaded, tissue irritation causes inflammation, protective muscle guarding, and altered movement patterns. This can create stiffness, weakness, and compensation that prolongs recovery.

How Can Osteopathy Help?

Osteopathic care may assist by:

Improving spinal and rib mobility

Reducing muscle guarding

Supporting circulation and tissue recovery

Correcting movement dysfunction contributing to re-injury

Recovery & Prevention.

Most mild to moderate strains improve within days to weeks with guided movement, mobility restoration, and progressive strengthening.

In addition to manual therapy, approaches such as relative rest, heat, and targeted exercises to relieve tension and improve joint strength can be helpful.
