Sciatica
Common Symptoms
What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica refers to irritation, compression, or inflammation of the sciatic nerve—the body’s largest nerve—which travels from the lower back through the hips, buttocks, and down each leg.
Rather than being a condition itself, sciatica is a symptom of an underlying mechanical issue affecting the lower spine, pelvis, or surrounding tissues.
Sciatica often occurs when the sciatic nerve or its nerve roots are irritated by spinal joint restriction, muscle tension (such as piriformis syndrome), disc bulges or herniations, pelvic imbalance or poor biomechanics.
How Can Osteopathy Help?
Osteopathic treatments work to improve mechanical function and reduce nerve irritation by:
Supporting posture and movement retraining
Restoring spinal and pelvic mobility
Reducing muscle tension and compensation patterns
Improving hip and core mechanics
Recovery & Prevention.
Most cases of sciatica improve with proper mechanical treatment, movement correction, and activity modification. Prevention often includes mobility work, strength training, and posture awareness.
